16/06/09 To speak another

I stopped learning German at the age of 13. It is a regret of mine, therefore, that my class continued until I was 15. You see there is so much great stuff out there, and by out there I mean online, which can only be truly appreciated if you can read and understand it. How many of you do a google search in Turkish? There are artists in Turkey you know. I think that it is sad that we expect everyone to have their online portfolios and sites in English.

I have been trying to delve into other cultures, and their inner workings of art. Those sites, galleries and collectives which don't translate to accommodate english speaking audiences, but are quite happy to publish to their own, and their own alone.

From what I can gather, thebakery is a German gallery, based in Munich, (München). The space is a beautiful one, here are some pictures (scroll down). As far as I can gather they have been open for just over a year, however as I said it's all in German, so I could be wrong.

What has struck me about thebakery is that they have all-sorts, and all great. There is illustration from Wolfgang, photography from Miguel and my personal favourite, a short film from Sanne Kurz. It's a 15 minute piece, I'd really suggest you give it your eyes. Shot so perfectly, with music that stirs you and muted colours which starve you, calling you in to watch until the end, leaving you hoping to be fed with an answer. It starts with this beauty from Checkhov, "Any idiot can face a crisis - it's day to day living that wears you out." Enjoy it here.

It always seems to be the case that nobody needs a break quite as much as the poor soul who just had one. I have taken a long break from the blog, no reason, yet let me press on with June, albeit that a good portion of the way past.

Fields of corn, that's what has my eyes and in some respects my heart these days. To walk looking up at the blue sky, down at the dry earth and to the side, peering into a game of hide and seek waiting to be played out. I have been looking through pictures dotted around the web, here are three which I have saved to the olde mac, just incase the interweb fails on us.

A dear friend played me something I liked recently so why not share it with you. Hope for agoldensummer, website here and tunes here.

In other news I love Fogo, you should too.
